Cheltenham is done and dusted and April 10th sees a small little race My Gran loved to bet on. It’s the Grand National.

The best way to approach the race? Prayer Mat I would say.

There are trends galore you can work at.

https://www.grandnational.org.uk/grand-national-trends.php  is an excellent starting point.

What stands out for me?

8 year old+ horses ( and I am assuming jockeys!) are the ones to focus on.

The Irish have won 3 of the last 4 Grand Nationals. They sweeped the board at Cheltenham. More Irish luck this National? A focus on Irish trained horses will whittle down the field.

Weight watchers…

Horses carrying 10 stone 12 lbs or less are the ones to focus on.

13/22 winners have had previous experience in a National-type race over the National fences. Look for Aintree form?

16/29 favourites have been placed in the front 4. Each way play on the fav?

10/17 winners have come from the top 8 in the betting.

28/29 winners ran no more than 55 days ago.

We’ll look at a few more trends next week and on the eve of the National on the 9th April.

Or you could do my Gran’s trick. Open up the race card. Close the eyes, get out a pin and plunge it into said race card. The horse you hit is highly likely to win the race.
